Hair Loss

Many men and women experience thinning hair or hair loss as they age. This thinning is referred to as alopecia and can have detrimental effects on one’s self-esteem. Anyone can suffer from hair loss/thinning, but it is much more common for men. Fortunately, there are treatment options available to help restore and decrease the rate of hair loss.

Hair Loss (Alopecia)

Alopecia is a disorder caused by an interruption in the body’s cycle of hair production. You may be familiar with hair transplants; however, there is a non-surgical, natural option for a treatment known as platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). PRF can be an effective treatment for treating both male and female pattern hair loss and thinning. It can also be used to stimulate further hair growth after a hair transplant.

PRF is a non-surgical treatment that involves injecting concentrated growth factors into the scalp to stimulate hair growth. The provider will collect a couple of vials of blood from your arm and centrifuge it to separate the plasma and growth factors. The growth factor portion is then isolated and injected/microneedled into the scalp. This process will help trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration within the hair follicles.

PRF hair restoration works best when the patient notices early hair loss/thinning. Unfortunately, PRF is not effective in those with shiny areas of the scalp with no hair follicles.

At Ambrosia MD, we offer PRF treatments for hair loss and thinning. Please contact our office for consultation.

FAQs

What is the difference between PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin)?

PRF is known as second-generation PRP. While both procedures require a blood draw, the end product varies between the two methods. PRF includes fibrin, platelets, white blood cells, stem cells, and growth factors. PRP includes platelets and growth factors.

PRP is processed at a higher centrifuge speed, while PRF is spun at a slower speed. The slower spin speed allows us to isolate and include fibrin, stem cells, and an increased concentration of growth factors in the final product. Fibrin acts as a scaffold to help hold the PRF product in the injected area to allow for a controlled release of the growth factors over days. PRP does not include fibrin, and as a result, the growth factors may disperse from the area much quicker.

Additionally, PRF requires no additional anit-coagulant to be mixed into your blood, whereas PRP requires the use of sodium citrate to avoid blood clotting. This effectively allows PRF to remain as natural and chemical-free as possible.

Ultimately, these key differences allow PRF to be more effective and provide better results.

Who is the ideal candidate for PRF hair treatment?

Both men and women can benefit from PRF treatment, especially those in the early stages of hair loss. It is also an excellent procedure for people suffering from hair thinning and those who do not want to take medications. Outside of hair treatments, PRF can also be added to microneedling sessions to improve skin texture/integrity and colour. Click here to learn more.

It is important to note that PRF cannot be performed in those who are taking blood thinners, have bleeding disorders, or are pregnant/breastfeeding. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to us prior to booking an appointment.

How does PRF hair treatment work?

It is important to know that there are 3 phases of hair growth.

  • Anagen (growth phase) – During this phase, new follicles are produced, and hair is rapidly growing. The longer the phase, the more healthy the hair. This phase can last anywhere from 3-5 years.
  • Catagen (transition phase) – At this point, the hair is transitioning from the growth phase to the resting phase. This lasts 1-2 weeks, and only 1% of your scalp is in this phase at any time.
  • Telogen (rest phase) – The final stage of the hair growth cycle. This is when old hair is shed to make room for new hair growth. About 10-15% of the hair is in this phase at any time.

PRF delivers growth factors and stem cells to the scalp to help promote the growth and nutrition of the hair follicles. This works in the anagen phase. Furthermore, the procedure also stimulates overall blood flow to the scalp, which provides additional nutrients to the hair follicles. Over time, the hair follicles should become stronger and thicker.

Given that your hair can be in different cycles at any time, it is imperative, to begin with a set of treatments approximately 4-6 weeks apart to treat as many hair follicles as possible while in the anagen phase.

When will I see the results?

The results of treatment can vary among individuals. On average, it can take 2–6 months to start seeing results. You will first notice a decrease in hair shedding with a subsequent increase in hair thickness and volume.

It is important to note that specific types of hair loss, such as male pattern baldness, are hormonal. Hair loss treatment is an uphill battle and consistent treatments every 6-12 months are required to maintain and slow down further hair loss. If you stop treatments, then the results will begin to decline as well.

How many treatments are required?

The treatments are recommended every 4–6 weeks, with a minimum of 3 treatments to start. At Ambrosia MD, we offer packages of 3 or 4 treatments at a reduced rate to get you started.

What are the side effects of PRF?

Since PRF is extracted from your own blood with no additives, it is extremely safe. There is no risk of allergic reaction and very little risk of infection or complication. You may notice mild bruising and inflammation of the scalp, but that will go away in a few days.

What should I be aware of prior to my PRF session?

Dr. Maghera will discuss the medications you may be taking. Stop all anti-inflammatory medications 1 week prior to the procedure (Advil, Aleve, CBD, Toradol, Ibuprofen, ASA, etc.). Certain supplements can also affect the quality of PRF and should be stopped 1 week prior to the treatment. Some of these include omega-3s, turmeric, and ginger. If you have questions about this, please reach out to our office prior to your appointment.

Please make sure that you eat and drink lots of fluids prior to your appointment. This will make the blood draw quicker and more effective.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Recovery after PRF is generally mild and manageable. You may notice a slight inflammatory response or redness on the scalp, and this should resolve within a few days. Try to avoid washing your hair on the same day of your treatment.  You can wash your hair the next day.

Avoid ice packs, saunas, and exercise for 24 hours after the procedure. Wait approximately 48 hours prior to resuming your regular hair-care products or skin-care products. Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications/supplements for another 1 week, as this can blunt the PRF response.
