TMJ disorder or grinding, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and chronic migraines or tension headaches are common concerns that can affect the day-to-day lives of our patients. These issues often require specialized treatments or therapies to provide relief and rejuvenation.
Temporomandibular disorder (TMJ) includes many disorders that can cause pain and dysfunction in the joints and muscles that help with jaw movement. TMJ disorder is commonly caused by excessive grinding of the teeth (bruxism) or clenching. The causes include, but are not limited to, stress, genetics, environmental, anatomical factors, and much more.
Treatment strategies include reducing stress, wearing dental appliances, massaging out the muscles on the side of the face (masseters and temporalis), and neuromodulator injections.
Neuromodulator (Botox® / Dysport®) can help to treat TMJ disorder by relaxing the tension of the jaw muscles (masseter and temporalis muscles). This is a temporary solution that can help improve symptoms of TMJ disorder. Patients often note a considerable decrease in clenching, grinding, jaw pain, chewing, and much more. This procedure will need to be repeated to achieve sustained results.

Neuromodulator injections for TMJ disorder can last, on average 4-6 months. They will need to be repeated every 4-6 months to maintain consistent benefits.
This varies from person to person. During the consultation, we will assess the condition of your muscles and determine the correct dose for you. The dose will depend on the size of your muscles, if both the masseter and temporalis muscle will be treated, and your ability to metabolize the drug. The units will be individualized for each person.
Many will recall that botulism toxin was derived from the infamous puffer fish. If one were to eat a pufferfish which was improperly prepared, they could suffer paralysis of their respiratory muscles, which can be quite dangerous.
In contrast to the botulism toxin in puffer fish, the neurotoxin used for cosmetic treatments is of a much smaller dose. Furthermore, the injection is administered directly into the muscle that is being treated. In this case, there are no systemic (bloodborne) side effects to the body. We are careful to monitor both the dose and location of the injections to avoid any negative side effects.
While neuromodulator injections are effective in treating TMJ disorder, this is not a permanent solution and will often require repeat injections. Please note this is not a cure for TMJ.
Sweating is produced by sweat glands and is a normal bodily function. Sweat is used as a means to regulate our body temperature. These sweat glands are located over many areas of the body, most commonly over our face, neck, armpits, groin, palms of our hands, and soles of our feet. Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is the result of your sweat glands overworking.
Excessive sweating of the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and armpits can be quite debilitating for a person and cause daily distress. Treatments include avoiding triggers, addressing underlying medical conditions, topical agents, wearing breathable clothing, taking oral medications, and neuromodulator injections.
Neuromodulator (Botox® / Dysport®) are an effective form of treatment for hyperhidrosis. These injections are administered over the areas of the skin prone to excessive sweating, mainly the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and the armpits. The neurotoxin works to block the nerve that signals the sweat glands to become active. Depending on the individual, each treatment can last up to 6 months.

Neuromodulators have been shown to reduce sweating by up to 90%. Results can be seen as early as two weeks after treatment.
Treatments are usually performed every 6-12 months, depending on patient response. It is important to note that this is not a permanent solution.
The dose of neurotoxin used for hyperhidrosis injections is much smaller. While uncommon, mild hand weakness is possible; however, you should still have full function, and it should not affect you on a day-to-day basis.
Migraines and tension headaches are conditions that affect a number of people. Unfortunately, these symptoms can be quite debilitating for some.
Botox® is a Health Canada-approved treatment for chronic migraines. It works by blocking the transmission of sensory nerves that produce pain. This can result in a reduction in pain for approximately 3-4 months.
In addition to chronic migraines, neurotoxin has been shown to be quite beneficial in those suffering from tension headaches. The toxin works to relax clenched muscles that are often implicated in tension headaches. It is important to know that neurotoxin treatments for tension headaches are an “off-label” treatment. Off-label means that a medication is being used to treat a condition it was not formally approved for but can be beneficial.

Health Canada approved the use of Botox® for the treatment of chronic migraine in 2011. The clinical trials proved its efficacy and safety for the treatment of chronic migraines.
It is not a permanent cure; however, we are looking to reduce the intensity and frequency of migraines by at least 50%. This response will vary from individual to individual.
