Skin Conditions

Aging skin, scars, acne scarring, skin pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks are common skin conditions that can impact our appearance and self-confidence. Each condition requires varying degrees of treatment and management to help us look and feel our best.

Aging Skin

As we grow older, our skin changes in various ways due to lifestyle, diet, sun damage, sleep position, gravity, stress, harsh weather, and personal habits. The primary reason for skin aging is due to the loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen is responsible for the strength and integrity of the skin, while elastin contributes to skin elasticity. With the gradual loss of collagen and elastin over time, our skin becomes thinner and begins to sag and stretch. Furthermore, due to repetitive movement of facial muscles and weakening of the skin, wrinkles will also begin to form.

The good news is that there are ways to reduce and diminish age-related skin concerns. Some forms of prevention include a healthy diet, daily mineral sunscreen use, moisturizer, and hydration.

At Ambrosia MD, we offer additional treatments to help restore and maintain the integrity of the skin working on both collagen and elastin. These treatments include:

Wrinkles and Fine Lines

As we age, most of us will begin to experience wrinkles and fine lines. Our skin loses collagen and elastin as we get older, ultimately causing the skin to become thinner and weaker. Furthermore, with repetitive contraction of muscles of expression, dynamic wrinkles will begin to form and become more noticeable over time. Many clients, both male and female, wish to be able to turn back the clock and reduce the look of their fine lines and wrinkles.

At Ambrosia MD, we offer cosmetic Neurotoxin / neuromodulator treatments (Botox® / Dysport®) to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We can treat most areas of the face, helping to address forehead lines, brow lines, crow’s feet, neck bands, and more. Neuromodulators work to block the signal that causes muscles to contract, resulting in an overall smooth appearance of the skin.

It is also important to address the integrity of the skin to help build up more collagen and elastin. This can be done through various methods, including daily skin care, microneedling, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), exosomes, and more. We offer a variety of these treatments, and we will discuss them with you during your consultation.

FAQs

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles are fine lines in the skin that form as we age. We have two main types of wrinkles: static and dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form due to repetitive contraction of our facial muscles. Over time, as we continue to contract these muscles, these lines will appear at rest and become static wrinkles. Neuromodulators (Botox® / Dysport®) work to block muscle contraction. If the muscle cannot contract, then a wrinkle cannot form. Dynamic wrinkles can be improved in as little as one session. Often, 1 year of consistent treatments every 3-4 months is required to help reduce and potentially eliminate static lines.

How does Neurotoxin work?

When the neuromodulator is injected, it blocks the signal (acetylcholine) from being released at the neuromuscular junction. This means that the signal from the nerve to the muscle cannot be transmitted and, as a result, the muscle will not contract. Once this signal is blocked, the muscle is effectively paralyzed, which provides an overall smooth look to the skin with few to no wrinkles.

How long does Neurotoxin last?

Neurotoxin lasts, on average, 3-4 months for fine lines and wrinkles. It usually takes about 10-14 days to become fully effective. At about 6-8 weeks, your treatment will be at its strongest (have the best muscular block). From 8 weeks onwards, the neurotoxin will begin to degrade, and your muscles will begin to move more and more.

Scars (Surgical)

A scar can form as a result of an infection, surgery, acne, trauma, and more. It is formed as the body’s way of healing damaged skin. A scar is composed of fibrous tissue and disorganized collagen. They can appear as thickened, bumpy tissue. While they can fade over time, the final appearance often is determined by age, skin colour, skin type, and genetics. Types of scars include hypertrophic, keloid, depressed, contracture, flat, and striae (stretch marks).

While scars are a normal part of life, they can cause considerable distress to many, especially those located on the face or other exposed areas of the body. In addition, some surgical scars can be visually unappealing and painful.

Various treatment options are available to help lessen the appearance of scars on the face and body. At Ambrosia MD, we understand the effect scars can have on one’s self-confidence and comfort. We offer microneedling treatments (SkinPen®) with platelet-rich fibrin or exosomes to help treat the appearance of scars. Over the course of a number of sessions, clients may experience a considerable improvement in the thickness and appearance of scars. Furthermore, some also notice that the hypersensitivity of the tissue improves as well.

FAQs

How does microneedling work to treat scars?

Microneedling creates superficial micro-injuries on the skin to jumpstart the production of collagen and elastin. This helps heal damaged tissues and consequently improves the appearance and texture of the treated area.

Are there any side effects of microneedling?

While microneedling is considered one of the most effective and safest skin treatments available, there are minor side effects to note. After the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments, and within the next 24-48 hours, the skin will be completely healed. After 3-4 days, there is barely any evidence that the procedure took place.

What products do I use after treatment?

It is important to ensure proper care of the skin after a microneedling treatment. During the first few days, we recommend the use of a gentle moisturizer and mineral sunscreen. Please avoid retinol, AHAs, BHAs, Vitamin C, Salicylic Acid, or hydroquinone for 4-5 days post-treatment. This will be discussed in detail with you during your treatment. For long-term skin care, everyone should consider the following products for their daily routine: moisturizer, mineral sunscreen, retinol, and vitamin C. Skincare products will be available in the clinic for purchase should you require recommendations.

How long will it take to see the results?

Everyone has different results, and some people notice results faster than others. In general, you should see improvements in the appearance of your scar in 3-6 sessions.

How often should I get microneedling done for my scar?

It is recommended that the treatments be 4-6 weeks apart to ensure that the skin has sufficient time to recover from the procedure.

Can microneedling get rid of scars permanently?

Microneedling has a very high success rate in minimizing the appearance of scars. Unfortunately, it is not possible to completely remove a scar; however, the look of it can be significantly improved.

Acne Scars

Acne is a common condition faced by many during their teenage years and into adulthood. While the vast majority of cases resolve on their own, select individuals are left with permanent scarring. This can have detrimental effects on one’s self-confidence and can impact one’s day-to-day life. Acne can lead to a variety of scars, including ice pick, rolling, boxcar, hypertrophic, and keloid.

The good news is that we now have minimally invasive treatments to help treat and greatly reduce the look of these scars. Microneedling (SkinPen®) can be used to help improve the look and severity of these scars. Specifically at Ambrosia MD, we pair our microneedling with platelet-rich fibrin or exosomes for an additional benefit in healing and skin correction. Often, multiple treatments will be required to see optimal benefits.

FAQs

Can I treat active acne with microneedling?

You should not perform microneedling sessions over active acne. This can potentially spread bacteria and infection over the skin. Microneedling is best used to treat old acne scars.

How does microneedling work to treat acne scars?

Microneedling creates superficial micro-injuries on the skin to jumpstart the production of collagen and elastin. This helps heal damaged tissues and consequently improves the appearance and texture of the treated area.

What benefits do platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and exosome therapy add to my treatment?

Both PRF and exosomes further accelerate the skin healing response caused by microneedling. Used together, the improvement in both collagen and elastin tissues will accelerate, allowing for quicker, more effective results.

Skin Pigmentation

Skin aging is the change in the pigmentation of our skin as a result of photoaging (exposure to the sun over many years). The pigment of the skin is made by melanin cells. Melanin is responsible for the overall colour of your skin but also for the small darkened spots one will see on your face over time. These spots can appear brown, grey, red, or pink. There are many causes of hyperpigmentation in addition to exposure to the sun. These causes include adrenal disorders, genetics (freckles), hormonal changes (pregnancy), skin injury, medications (that cause photosensitivity), melasma, and vitamin deficiencies.

There are several treatment options for hyperpigmentation of the skin. In addition to identifying the cause and working to eliminate/avoid it, patients can consider additional therapies. Topical treatments can include retinol, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, vitamin C, azelaic acid, and chemical peels. Furthermore, lasers and microneedling are other forms of therapy that can be used to help improve skin pigmentation.

At Ambrosia MD, we offer microneedling (SkinPen®) with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and exosomes to treat skin pigmentation. Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy that improves the texture and colour of the skin. We pair it with PRF / exosomes, which contain growth factors, to compound the improvement of skin texture and colour.

FAQs

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy or micro-needling, stimulates your skin’s natural ability to repair itself and produce new collagen and elastin for healthier, younger-looking skin.

How does it work?

Microneedling creates microscopic channels that allow for the controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism. This, in turn, triggers new collagen and elastin fibres to form, resulting in smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin. Microneedling can reverse years of sun damage, improve acne and surgical scars, reduce pore size, and enhance the overall appearance of aging skin.

What benefits do platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and exosome therapy add to my treatment?

PRF and exosomes are excellent for those looking to enhance their results after procedures such as microneedling. The application of topical exosomes and PRF accelerates and enhances the effects of microneedling, including but not limited to: recovery, skin texture, skin integrity, skin pigmentation, scar treatment, and more. The combination of microneedling and exosomes / PRF ultimately results in more effective results.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks (Striae) are indented streaks that can appear when there is rapid stretching of the skin.  These can be found anywhere on the body but are most common on the abdomen, arms, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Usually, this is a result of a degeneration of both collagen and elastin. Stretch marks are a normal part of life for most people – they are a roadmap of where you have been and what has made you who you are. However, if they impact your self-esteem or how you see yourself, there is nothing wrong with taking steps to minimize their appearance.

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is one of the most effective ways of treating stretch marks to minimize visibility. This treatment involves a hand-held dermatological device that creates micro punctures on the skin’s surface to supercharge the skin’s healing ability. These procedures work to stimulate collagen production, thereby decreasing the depth and severity of stretch marks.

At Ambrosia MD, we offer microneedling (SkinPen®) in combination with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or exosomes to augment the healing response, resulting in more impressive results.

This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments, and within the next 24-48 hours, the skin will be completely healed. After 3-4 days, there is barely any evidence that the procedure took place.

How long will it take to see the results?

Everyone has different results, and some people notice results faster than others. In general, you should see improvements in the appearance of stretch marks in 3–6 sessions.

How often should I get microneedling done on the stretch marks?

The treatments are recommended to be 4–6 weeks apart to ensure that the skin has sufficient time to recover from the procedure.

Can microneedling permanently get rid of stretch marks?

Microneedling has a very high success rate in minimizing the appearance of stretch marks. However, it is not possible to remove stretch marks permanently without surgical intervention. Furthermore, if an individual experiences additional rapid weight changes, they may be prone to developing new stretch marks.
